Accident Summary:
THE FLIGHT WAS A ROUTINE COMBAT ASSAULT MISSION WHICH ORIGINATED FROM THE PZ LOCATION AT APPROXIMATELY 1400 HOURS. THE AC MADE HIS PRE-TAKEOFF CHECK AND TOOK OFF WITH A NORMAL LOAD OF SEVEN ARVN TROOPS AND HIS CREW ABOARD. ON CLIMB OUT AT APPROXIMATELY 70 KNOTS AIRSPEED AND 700 TO 800 FEET ALTITUDE AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED AND THE AIRCRAFT YAWED TO THE LEFT. THE AC NOTICED A SPLIT IN THE ROTOR AND ENGINE RPM TACHOMETER NEEDLES, AND A QUICK RISE IN EGT. IMMEDIATELY HE ENTERED AUTOROTATION AND SELECTED A CLEARING FOR LANDING. IN ORDER TO LAND IN THE AREA SELECTED, THE AC TURNED THE AIRCRAFT 360 TO THE LEFT AND SPIRALED DOWN. UPON TERMINATION OF THE AUTOROTATION, PITCH WAS PULLED TO CLEAR THE LAST BARRIERS CAUSING A LOSS OF RPM AND EVIDENTLY RESULTED IN A HARD LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED UPRIGHT, FACING TOWARDS THE NORTH, AND THERE WAS NO FIRE.\\
